Luxor

The streets of Luxor. I remember a butchers shop where the carcasse was just hung up outside the door and they butchered it an sold it almost instantaneously to the gathered customers. Bit grim!

Setting off on the donkey trek to the Valley of the Kings. Sadly Sue could not do this due to her asthma. It also really annoys her that this was my favourite part of the trip.

As I remember it was very early in the morning and we had to get a boat across the river. I think that is where the crocodile picture came from. I think this is sunrise…. not that you can tell.

I am not sure they do this trek anymore as the poor donkeys were not that well looked after. I remember I could actually touch the ground with my feet while sitting on my donkey.

Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari)

Hatshepsut was one of the few women to rule Egypt as pharaoh, and the temple is all about reinforcing her divine right to do so.

I think Philae is back near Aswan though.

“Remember the Bond movie?”

The 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me (starring Roger Moore) features key scenes filmed at the Karnak Temple complex in Luxor, Egypt. Bond and Agent Anya Amasova pursue the villainous Jaws through the Great Hypostyle Hall, characterized by its 134 massive columns.

“A brave man – my glamorous outfit at the time of the proposal!”

I also remember that the engagment ring – that nearly got exposed in the bag search at Heathrow – was far too big. When I bought it I hadn’t thought to try to work that out and the girl in the shop had much bigger fingers than Sue!

The proposal took place outside Kom Ombo temple on Sue’s birthday. That evening we were allowed to sleep head to head rather than head to toe on the boat!
