Roscoff to L'Aber Wrach

Woke up, checked the sunrise out of my window (slot) looks good, so up to get a quick snap. We were aiming to set sail at 9am so we had to get a move on .

We had to hang around the dock for a bit as the red light was on as the ferry was leaving. A French boat tried to run through it and got a whistle blown at them and shouted at by an angry French port official . We weren’t smug at all.

The fishing boats were back in by the time we left

Past the chapel on the hill, where we we’re the day before.

The end of the pier and a view of Roscoff in the distance.

It started getting a bit of a blow going, swells to about 1-2m. Marco said, “Is everyone OK with this?” , “Yes we replied”. “I don’t think we want to do any worse weather than this”. Amusing in hindsight.

The swells grew to be over 3-4m high. I have been in bigger ( 40 years ago on a 120ft ketch in the north sea, if you are interested.) The video doesn’t do it justice as the orientation of the boat to the waves loses a lot.

After what seemed like a very long time, we spotted these 2 lighthouses on the approach to L’Aber Wrach. The tall one is about 90ft high and is very striking.

Update: When they said 90ft , I remember thinking if that’s 90ft then …. anyway, after an update from John,  I believe it is 79m so thats 260ft! It is the tallest true lighthouse in the world . There are taller ones but they have towers built on top for the lights, so they don’t really count or look so imposing.

When got into the inlet there were a lot of water sports happening, some guy surfing with a kite held in his hands , end this guy on a hydrofoil which looked fab! We also saw a seal !

We got directed to a very nice berth, as you can see. Easy to get out of, for our 7 o’ clock in the morning departure!

We went to a great pub, with very nice local beer served from a hand pump and some local cider. Followed up with a little walk to another establishment for pizza and moule mariniere. It was a bit chilly so I ran back to the boat for a coat and a blanket for John and Marco … what can I say.

Another fabulous sunset, off to bed for an early start; maybe a small night cap.

Here is a recap on some of the photos and a few extras.
