La Rochelle to Laredo - Day one

So, this is probably the longest sail so far, and only the two of us. Understandably there are concerns from our families about it, but this length of trip makes sense to me.

We have waited out the weather, and the wind for the next week is fair to nothing and relatively in the right direction . This decreases the risk with such an inexperienced crew member like myself. It is a relatively quiet part of the bay in terms of weather and ship traffic, so night sailing is less problematic. We will both sleep on deck and take it in shifts to keep a look out. Fishing fleets would be the main thing to steer clear of I would imagine. The autopilot, is I think I have already said  having an extra crew member, and is now called Otto. So we might as well crack on and get to Spain.

I woke up up at 5:45 , 15 minutes before my alarm and I had a note from sue expressing some concerns, so I told her the above. Then time for a cup of tea before we prepped for departure at 7am. We had a small problem as a boat was moored at our rear making getting away a little complex. The marina staff had said they would help get us out but were no where to be seen.

The very cool French man on the boat, behind our stern, appeared, replete in his straggly long blond hair and Breton sailors smock (sorry, I only got a picture of the boat). He kindly ran up to the marina office and they sent a boat round to help. They pulled our stern out and we set off, without bumps, to the fuel pontoon.

I jumped off and secured us, we had to pull the boat forward to get onto the diesel pump. The payment system worked flawlessly this time, so we filled up and ….

…….  set off just as the sun was rising above the masts in the marina.

So we left La Rochelle with another beautiful dawn… although a few more clouds would have been nice. First we had to get around the next island before we could get on to our tack down to Spain.
We were making a good 7 knots on a reach, when we made the turn the wind was a little bit light and moving to our stern, the swell was up to 2m in places so it was a bit of a wallow through the waves.

The wind kept going all day. This was the longest sail we had managed the whole trip. We had data for the first few hours, which was fun, but as land disappeared from every horizon it faded and the last messages were sent.
We thought there would be very few ships, how right we were. This was pretty much the last ship we saw.

Zero sightings for hours and hours , 24  hours in total, a whole day! We saw a few seagulls but nothing else but rolling swells , Simpson clouds and the sun. I can’t remember a time when I spent this long with no sign of humanity, other than Marcello and the boat. We had a lot of music playing, 80s dance , reggae and my 2019 playlist, all available on Spotify if you’re interested.
Lunch was pot noodles, strangely satisfying, must be the salt! I had the Ramen in honour of nephew Harry, I’m not sure it would have lived up to his standards though. Marco even lowered his and drank instant coffee today.

I managed two naps, in the afternoon. I’ll would probably need them in the night!

Dinner was the Kerala curry I had cooked the day before, with rice. It looks disgusting but was really rather nice. So nice, I had seconds as my midnight feast. Marco had it for breakfast the next day.

The weather was still sunny, as it had been all day. Lots of little clouds dotted the sky, concentrated on the horizons as the sun started to set. We were going to have another lovely sunset. It didn’t disappoint, although the one passing the channel islands was still the best. It’s all in the clouds.

Yet another fabulous sunset

The moon had risen as the sun had set. It was nearly a full moon, just a couple of days away from completing its cycle. It was ascending in the sky and looking like it would be our companion for the whole night.

We settled in for the night, an hour on an hour off.

I have been playing with long exposures and moving the camera at the same time. I am quite enjoying the results
