La Coruña to Porto

Day 1

We woke up pre-dawn, a last visit to the toilets in the dungeons of the marina office before setting off. The Norwegian boat next to us had already gone. We saw and spoke to them, on the VHF radio, later in the day. I can’t remember if we had breakfast or not, but probably. We prepped the boat and set off.

We set off, as per the video above. All went smoothly and it was great having Luka and Viv to help out. We got the ropes and bouys stowed and settled down.

It was very relaxing watching La Coruña fade into the background. We could see the tower from miles and miles away. Quite impressive given its provenance.

Under motor we made steady progress. We managed to get a couple of hours sailing, but the wind and sea state we were expecting did not really materialise. As we were under motor and the wind was aft we rolled quite a bit, as you can see.

Later on in the afternoon we passed Finisterra, on the Costa Del Morte. Or in English, The End of the World on the Coast of Death. Quite pleasant really. As we sailed past the fishing boats were going out for the night. We knew we would need to keep an eye out for crabbing pots and nets.

That evening we ate spaghetti bol that Lukas cooked the day before. Very lovely it was too, keeping up the high standard of food we have been having!

We discussed how to do the shifts. There would be 4 3 hour shifts from 9pm until 9am. Viv and I got the 12-3am and the 6am until 9am.

Then we settled in for the sunset. Then I got my head down, ready for my midnight watch.
