Porto to Cascais or Oeiras?
I had a bad nights sleep. Sometimes I get a little bit of eczema on my hands and at night, the itch never goes away. The only positive is that it helps me identify a little with Sam’s condition. Plus I think there is a mossy stowaway!!!
So after doing a bit of the blog I managed to get tired enough to get back to sleep and then the alarm went off as I needed a shower before we set off. I took the recycling up to the bins on the way.
When I came back we all had a bit of breakfast, apart from Lucas , who had been dispatched to the shops to try to get some provisions. He arrived back having completely failed to get anything…. the Portuguese don’t do early!
We made the boat ready for departure and set off to the fuel pontoon.
We got tied on and there was no-one to be seen. Marco had to wander off to find someone. Eventually we filled up. Meanwhile a New Zealand boat turned up also wanting fuel. They had to wait quite a while. They were heading south too, so we might bump into them again.
We set off leaving a hazy Porto , with no wind so all on the motor… again. We were enthusiastically hailed by a fishing boat, returning from their nights fishing. I though what a friendly lot, but they were probably waving to Viv.
I was feeling pretty knackered so I had a little snooze before lunch. Lukas cooked a lovely lunch using the doggy bag of rice and pork strip from the restaurant 2 nights ago. Did I mention he’s a chef? Bloody useful shipmate!
The afternoon was quiet. We had seen the NZ boat during the morning, but they and another boat pulled ahead of us, must be burning their gasoil.
The afternoon was pretty dull, I think the only thing of note was that Viv was still hungry and made some noodles, that made us all hungry. It could have been relaxing apart from the bloody lobster pots, loads of them all of the time. This means that one cannot really relax, you have to keep an eye out. We did catch a rope off one, if this happens then you need to whack the engine into neutral and hope the ropes don’t get caught and wrapped around the propeller. If they do Lukas has brought his mask and has volunteered to dive under the boat and free us.
Internet access was pretty ropey, however I did get a message that Sam has a job offer !!!! This is working with people with mental health issues, local to Southampton so he can live at home which will be good for his skin health (see headfirst.me). Congratulations to Sam!
Dinner was also good. Viv has been suffering a bit from sea sickness, so Lukas boiled some rice and heated up the lovely curry she made for us the day before.
The sunset was OK, but I’m getting a bit blasé about them now.
I thought I would get my head down early. I got in my sleeping bag and read my kindle. I noticed that the base of my thumb started hurting, as I moved it a tiny insect flew off it. Sod it, I got my pillow and sleeping bag out and hit my cabin with a big dose of fly killer. I kept the doors and windows shut for a few minutes then opened them up. Another 10 minutes and I tried sleep again. bingo, 3 hours lovely sleep. Just before midnight I woke and went up to start my shift.
Mossy update: Viv just crushed one, it was full of blood…. probably mine!
