Llangenith – Day 3

After another great night’s sleep, and in contrast to yesterday, today we had a plan! We set off nice and early on our walk across the cliffs to Rhossili. The start of this walk is a very steep hill to the rear of the campsite and, in 25 degree heat, this was quite a challenge! We were rewarded at the top, however, by a magnificent sweeping view across the bay – to the campsite and beach on our right and Rhossili and Worm’s Head on our left. We took this opportunity to stop and have our ‘breakfast’ of a cheese and Branston Pickle sandwich, which certainly evoked childhood memories.

The rest of the walk to Rhossili was easy and stunning and, after a quick chat with a welsh apiarist, during which Dave dropped in some gems about his farming cousins and how long he’d been coming to Llangennith so that he didn’t seem like a ‘typical tourist’, we walked the two miles to our favorite cafe and sat down admiring the spectacular beach view with some refreshments.
For the return walk we were able to walk along the beach itself, and there is nothing better for hot feet than to be released from socks and walking boots and paddle in a cool sea!

When we got half way along the beach we decided to stop for a swim and this was the highlight of the day, if not the week! The beach was so long that we had a whole stretch of beach to ourselves and, although we were not skinny dipping :-), it was wonderful to be undisturbed as if on our own private beach. The sea was very warm in the shallows and, with a gentle surf, was the most enjoyable sea swim either of us remembered for a very long time. The temperature felt continental and we then wended our way back to the van, drip-drying as we went.

The rest of the day was typically inactive and punctuated only by another Kelly’s Cornish ice cream, with us doing a straight swap today as Dave chose raspberry and white chocolate whilst I had honeycomb and honey! I was unable to load a new novel to my kindle due to intermittent connection issues so started to read a mindfulness novel we already had and decided that it was not too bad a day on which to be ‘in the moment’!!

In the evening we had a pre-prepared meal from home which was African sweet potato and peanut stew with savory rice – and afforded us the great excitement of using both our new Ingenio pans at once!

We then transferred some Spanish brandy into a drinking flask, grabbed two beakers and went down to the beach for our final night’s sunset. The beach was much busier than before as lots of people had arrived ready for the weekend and the schools had just broken up. There was still loads of space, but there were also fires, music and groups of teenagers enjoying the scene. Dave, armed with his tripod and camera, was disappointed with the lack of sunset-enhancing clouds but this was compensated for by two very considerate fishermen who were perfectly positioned to improve his shots!! He managed to get one good shot and, after all that fresh air, we were asleep almost as soon as we got back to the van.

Think it is an excellent idea and I am sure you will get enormous pleasure out of it in the future. I wish I’d kept records of our activities. However Iv did keep records of all the golf games I played over a period approaching fifty years. Beautiful photographs and we are delighted you are having such a lovely time with great weather.
