Dave and I headed off early into the city to go up the tower, Torre Tavira, and get a panoramic view across Cadiz. It doesn’t open until 10 so we found a nearby bar and saw a very long queue nearby which turned out to be for churros and hot chocolate. I got a sizeable portion and it made a very lush breakfast! Marco sorted out some things on the boat and went to the office which opened at 10 and then met us later for a coffee at 11.
The Tower was 173 steps up and very interesting with views all over the city. It also had a great example of a camera oscura and we were able to have a good look at it without doing the full tour!! (not that it was oscuring anything)
After that we had a quick look around the street market and found the central food market which unfortunately was shut (but you could still smell the fish) due to it being Easter week.
We wandered back to meet Marco in a café for a coffee before exploring the city further.
Our first port of call was a really beautiful church which was an amazing place to see because it had a huge collection of all the floats being used for the holy week processions. This meant we were able to see them really close up for all the different stages of the life of Christ. There were quite a few ladies dressed in black wearing the mantillas and lace headdresses so it gave it a very traditional and solemn feel to the occasion.
After that we went on and had a look at the cathedral, which was stunning, before going back to the central market building.
Now, all the cafés surrounding the place where the central stalls would normally be were open and buzzing with visitors. We did a full circle to see which one we liked the look of and settled for the Freidor del Mercado where we lunched on freshly fried squid, baby squid and prawns. Marco bought a typical bottle of regional sherry and we also got some olives and dried sliced tuna to take back to the boat later.
We then went walking along the Maritime walk on the other side of the city which is beautifully landscaped with palm trees and really lovely park.
We spent the evening on theBoat and were able to sit on deck because it was beautifully sunny. We ate the tuna and olives followed by the leftovers of Dave’s stew. Then we played cards with Dave teaching us the Queen of spades. Marco was very good at it!!
Thank Sue, that sounded a marvellous day. No choc and churros for me but another lovely morning so a pot of coffee and a croissant in the garden sounds good
