The Rock

Marco and Dave went across to Gibraltar for a massive fry up breakfast.

(Dave here) To get to Gibraltar we had to have our passports checked by Spanish customs and British customs and after that we walked towards the airport runway that you have to cross to get to Gibraltar. When we got to the other side the announcement started that the plane was coming into land, so we thought we would watch it land. It was very amusing because some of the last people crossing the runway were an old Spanish couple and they stopped to take photos, then they walked on a bit and then went back to take more photos, in the end after getting buzzed by the cleaning van on the runway the policeman had to walk to the middle of the runway and drag them back to the barrier. I would’ve been quite amused if a plane had come in right then.

After that we had a massive English breakfast.

Dave here (again), we then went looking for the Apple Store in Gibraltar as it being tax-free I was toying with the idea of buying one. We knew it was shut today but we just wanted to check we knew where it was. We then wandered towards the cable car and every few hundred metres were accosted by people selling us a trip in a van up the rock which we resisted. We got to the cable car and bought tickets for the whole shebang, as it looked quite interesting. We got on the cable car with Marco engineering it that we had a great view down the rock as we ascended. We then got off and carefully moved around all the rabid monkeys that were loafing around on the stairs and handrails of the viewing platforms. After I had taken copious photographs we set off to find St John’s Cave.

At this point we realised what a pain those taxis were 10 or 20 of them at a time all lined up blocking the roads, people jumping on and off, and although it was a little hot it was a really nice walk to the caves. Unfortunately, I had forgotten to bring any water so when we got to the cave I was glad to be able to buy some, then we descended into the cave. It was full of stalactites and stalagmites and was beautifully lit to show the shape of a saintly angel which was huge. We wandered around and then came upon a auditorium and sat down and watch the light show, which was quite spectacular.

We then walked to the tunnels that had been dug into the rock to defend Gibraltar from the French and Spanish in the 18 century and defence that was done in the first and second world wars. It was a long walk and it was getting quite hot so we had an ice cream when we got there and then explore the tunnels.

Sue meanwhile stayed in the marina to get the laundry done. It was very sociable in the Laundrette. First she got a good fix of French chat with a lady from La Rochelle. Then she met an ex student of Itchen who had been there in 1997 and still lives in Southampton. She then walked across to Gibraltar climbed a lot of steps, decided she’d had enough so turned back downand went for a nice pub lunch in a beer garden.

When they had finished their visit, Dave and Marco came in and found Sue in the pub. They were boiling hot and absolutely desperate for a pint. The waitress found the look of desperation on their faces as she approached highly amusing.
We popped into the supermarket on the way back. Sue  then rang a few Marinas to get us booked in for the next few days. Marco went to the chandlery to try to get an adapter.

We walked back to the boat, chilled out, Marco cooked our Mexican food for the night which we ate on deck with a lovely view of the rock. Then we went downstairs and played a couple of games of shithead. And so to bed.
