And so to France

We headed off for France aiming to stop at Saint Jean de Luz. We had to make a quick stop to bag this photo. Literally 2 Km from the campsite.

When we arrived at St Jean de Luz we got a great space near the harbour and the parking was free as it was ‘dimanche fin de guerre’. We’d filled up with petrol in Spain as we’d been forewarned that there was 30% discount.

Not a bad view as you fill up

In Saint Jean de Luz we saw (from the outside!) the Maison Louis Quatorze, Quai Maurice Ravel and the house where Ravel (composer of the bolero of Torvill and Dean fame) was born, the Eglise Saint Jean Baptiste and walked along by the Grande Plage and the Rue Gambetta shopping street. There was a nice buzz to the place with people lunching in the little squares.

We then headed along the coast to find a campsite with nice facilities for the night. Camping Bord de Mer on La Plage d’Erromardie was by a long sandy beach and had various little bars and a couple of restaurants. For dinner, we had fish soup with croutons that we’d bought in Saint Jean de Luz along with a Camembert a baguette from the campsite shop freshly baked at 4p.m!!

There was a bit of a hairy moment just before dinner when a Spanish couple arrived opposite us and there was a loud creaking noise as the top of their van drove into a huge hanging branch!!! Yikes!!! The driver had to let the tires down to get back out without causing further damage and then a campsite employee climbed the tree and directed him in a multiple point turn to extract himself from the situation. All very stressful to watch!!!

After dinner we decided to stroll back down to the beach and there was such a beautiful sunset that we got tempted to round off the evening with a drink in the beach bar. Dave had endless fun lining the drinks up to reflect the setting sun! 🤣
