The last day

When we woke up it was really rainy. We had decided to go to Le Mont St. Michel and Paul had recommended a good parking spot from where we could walk along the river. The weather was looking rough for a couple of hours however so we decided to flip the day and do our supermarket shopping early so that by the time we got that done the rain would’ve cleared. We found a big Intermarché , checked all duty-free allowances and carefully chose our wine purchases after having a croissant and coffee for breakfast in the van.

We then headed out on our way towards the Mount and happened to pass an Armorlux outlet shop which was calling out to Sue. Dave had the most success in there, getting a new pair of chinos and a nice jumper of the sale rail and I got a T-shirt. I was actually wearing my stripey red Armorlux T-shirt at the time, which has lasted me at least 20 years, so I thought it would be a worthwhile purchase.

A little bit further along we stopped at a shop which was selling regional produce. It was right next to the river with a view of Mont St. Michel in the distance. The proprietor told us a brilliant parking spot by the town Hall and we had a really lovely walk along the river towards the Mount. We had both been there before, so were not particularly keen to go right to the top. It was really lovely walking along and seeing the Mount get larger and larger as we approached. Furthermore, it wasn’t too crowded and we could get a good close-up view of the tidal barrier in front of the Mount.

When we actually got there the crowds were already huge. There were various school groups walking barefoot across the sand and masses of tourists walking along the boardwalk which had been installed since our last visit. There were very very regular shuttlebuses as well and we were amazed at how big the crowds were given that it is not yet high season. Compared to the tranquility of the walk, none of this really appealed to us, so we made a quick toilet stop on the Mount before wending our way back by the river walk.

Andy, who is renowned for his curries, had offered to cook one for us. We were very excited at the prospect, particularly as this would be our first curry for over two months! He took us to see the sheep and then Paul took us on a walk through the woods. It was gorgeous in the dappled evening light and we saw a mud hole where the boar wallow and heard some baby woodpeckers in their nest. We also saw a fox running across one of the fields.

We had a lovely curry dinner and then packed our bags ready for our return trip tomorrow.
