We headed off early for the 45 minute drive to the next campsite Camping de La Playa in Logroño. (So called because the owners are from San Sebastián, where there’s a lovely beach!!) this campsite was in a great location as it was just a 10 minute stroll into the city.
The objective for today was to have a very low-key day and do some planning. We strolled into the town along the river before lunch and checked whether the famed tapas bars in Calle Laurel would be open this evening. We then had lunch back at the campsite cooked in the fresh air.
In the afternoon, there was another storm and we sheltered in the van. We had arranged to have a catch up call with Janette, which we did at about seven. After that we headed back into the town for Tapas (known as pintxos in this region), and luckily the rain had abated.
The recommended street in which to partake of Logroño’s renowned pintxos was Calle Laurel. We started off in the famous Bar Soriano, where they have been serving the same snack since 1972. This was a mushroom stack topped with a prawn. We washed it down with a glass of
Tarón (young white Rioja).
After that, we headed to Tastavin, which was another of the bars recommended in the guidebook that Harriet had given us for Christmas. We shared three pintxos which were tuna tataki, thin crackling and a little meat tartlet, washed down with Sierra de Cantabria (Crianza).
In there, we met an Australian lady who enthusiastically recommended La pulpería de La Universidad nearby. We strolled over there and ordered octopus and squid and had a very nice time chatting to 2 Australian ladies, and a Korean lady who had met whilst doing the Camino de Santiago. The wine we tried there was called Luis Cañas, also very nice.
We then ambled to another area of the city, known for its pubs and snacks, and Dave tried Toreznos, which is deep fried pieces of pork belly, so right up his street. We got chatting to a couple of lads who were over here working for Siemens from Hungary. It was nice to have a sociable night out for a change and the walk back along the river was very relaxing We slept well!!
Words of the day:
Pulpo = octopus
Toreznos = bacon rashers
We’ve eaten in a number of those Pintxos bars… including the mushroom one! Great vibe.
Hi Sue, we had a good night out in this town. Our first proper one since being on the ferry. The towns have been so quiet, and the weather in the evenings has been quite stormy for a while now.
Sounds a good evenings eating and drinking. Like the blue photo Cathie back today so things in the garden are definitely improving
It was pretty good. Last night with the pig’s ear was not quite so nice!
