We set off at about 9 o’clock amid pale grey skies. Fortunately the sky had cleared by about 11, so we got to see the best of the scenery against a blue sky backdrop. We came back to Aguilar del Campoo where we had taken a detour on the first day – we had both forgotten why the name sounded familiar!!! The Montaña Palentina was stunning and had plenty of great view points to stop at. There were some very rough and twisty roads so it took quite a while. As soon as we were in Cantabria, however, the road surfaces improved instantly!! We finally got to Potes at about 2 and it was definitely worth the wait.
The campsite Camping La Viorna was a couple of kilometres beyond the town. It was set in stunning scenery, had great facilities including a little shop and a restaurant. The reception staff were really helpful and informative and they provided details of local walking trails from the campsite. We pre-booked a ride on the Fuente Dé cable car for tomorrow morning.
There was a nice path downhill into the town so we strolled down there in the afternoon and went for a drink. There was plenty of hustle and bustle, a lot of souvenir shops, plenty of bars and restaurants and some stunning historic buildings by the river. The highlight, however, were the stunning mountain views in all directions. The weather was gorgeous so we were able to make the most of our surroundings, although the walk back up the hill was very hot!!!! 🤣
We had a sandwich in the van for dinner. I nipped along to the end of our row to fill my water up, and there was the most amazing sunburst through the clouds as the sun went down. It was really beautiful and quite sociable because several people were climbing the fence and chatting in their enthusiasm to get photos of the sunset!!
Beautiful photos!
Are you planning to go to Asturias? I strongly recommend Covadonga up in the mountains: the monasterio and the lagos are a must.
Maybe next time. After this, our plan is to go to the coast. We were given a good recommendation by our next-door neighbour of a beach like Lulworth Cove but better. We head off there on Monday after going to the local market here to stock up.
Thanks Eva. We’ll definitely add that to the list – we’d like to do this area more thoroughly another time, it’s so gorgeous. xx
A lovely mixture of ‘happenings’
A sunset too, golly gosh.
