What a Rubbish Market

So we got up with a mission, to attend the market in Potes. It seems to have a certain level of fame and had been mentioned by a few people, so we decided to support the local community and go to it, aiming to buy all of our food there for the next couple of days. We got the van packed up, waved good bye to our neighbours and set off to find the delights of Potes Monday Market.

We got to the town at about 9 o’ clock. 1st mistake, this is Spain and nothing really starts until a lot later. So we had a lovely breakfast of coffee and tortilla with goats cheese and wandered around the town a bit. We went back as the market started to open up. Maybe we were still a bit early as there were very few food stalls there, mainly dodgy clothing and other stuff. We found a vegetable stall with a small selection of vegetables and Sue got in trouble for man handling the tomatoes, which I found quite funny. We also bought some rustic looking bread, 2 empanadas and a couple of cakes things. More about them later. We then drove to the supermarket to buy the rest of what we wanted to buy. A single large potato cost €1…. blooming heck.

We then set off for the coast and went along this amazing road the N621? Though an incredible gorge. Being Cantabria they were doing a major upgrade to the road and so there were traffic lights at regular intervals as they were increasing the width of it. Just as well as there seemed to be a lot coaches going along it.

We got to the coast and I made a wrong turn and we ended up at a different campsite to the one we had been recommended. We consulted park4night to see if was ay good. It used to be, apparently, but they they erected a load of tents on the best spots and relegated the vans to the rubbish spots. So we turned back and went to Camping La Paz, and we were very glad we did.

It was a little pricey and we were ordered to follow a guy in a Land Rover who would guide us to our pitch. The campsite is basically set into a cliff with terraces for tents and vans. We went up and down and eventually got directed to a terrace with a few other camper vans alongside the bay. We said hello to our new neighbour… time for lunch. The empanada……. terrible, just pastry. Oh well.

We then went for a swim and I think we then had a siesta. I did some photos for the blog and we whiled away the afternoon in this beautiful part of the world.

Tea was to be chicken in lemon and fried onion with pepper with hunks of fresh rustic bread from the market. Sue did a marvellous job with the chicken, very tasty and also the onions and pepper. The bread? Probably the worst rustic loaf ever. I may be a bit of a bread snob but the middle of it was a core of flour…. I am not sure how you could even make it this badly. Anyway, the white wine helped it all go down a bit better. We then threw most of it away.

After dinner we had a catchup call with Ben and the went for a walk on the beach to capture the sunset. We followed a path, set up by the campsite which had a lovely stone bench in the prime sunset viewing area where we sat and watched the sun go down.

The campsite demographic is very different here. There are quite a few beautiful young people who are into surfing. So, instead of enjoying the feeling of being pretty much, the youngest people on the campsite, here we are very much the old wrinklies. 🤣🤣
