Today is Marco’s birthday and we took the dinghy to shore before heading up the hill to Spartochori village for a birthday breakfast to a beautiful café with a viewing point. The views in every direction were spectacular. There was a fabulously corpulent Greek Orthodox priest in full garb on the next table. I would have loved an image of him with the mountain backdrop but Dave rightly thought it would be a bit rude! 😃
We had some lovely juice and coffees and a new experience – a Greek omelette with olives, feta and green pepper – very nice! Dave and I had a walk around the village while Marco had his birthday call from Chloe and Matt.
We then walked back down and took the opportunity for our last swim in a bay before heading back to Lefkade. After a while, Marco and Dave put the sails up, although there was very little wind. We sailed for a while at a very relaxing 2.5 knots.
When we got to Lefkada we all either dozed or read and then Dave and I went for a wander into the town. We got chatting to a couple in a bar in the square who were over from Newbury for a Greek wedding. They gave us some recommendations for dinner from a friend who comes here regularly.
When we got back Dave realised that he’d got a splinter in his foot when jumping onto the pontoon to tie off the boat earlier. Splintergate ensued!! Theresa had a very well-stocked first aid kit and provided antiseptic wipes, a needle, savlon and a plaster. I tried with a tweezers to no avail and eventually to my great joy and Dave’s great relief, with the help of a needle the splinter emerged!! Sadly this was merely to reveal another still larger one still in there! 🤣 Finally that one came out too and he felt pretty comfy and ready for the night out.
We then headed to the main square to Nissi restaurant, by which time the square was typically abuzz with locals, tourists and children whizzing around on scooters (in a good way!) and playing ball. It was that typical outdoorsy atmosphere that you get on an evening out in the Med, with people of all ages going about their business and a very pleasant temperature.
The birthday dinner was really nice with a couple of favourite starters of courgette fritters and baked aubergine as well as something else new, namely spicy whipped feta. For mains I had pork souvlaki, Dave had lamb cutlets, Theresa had sea bass and Marco had slow-roasted pork belly. After that we could barely move!
