After breakfast we headed into Lagos for a browse around the shops. We started off in the fish market, where Sue B got some sardines to take home for lunch later. We got a few bags of seeds and fig cakes in another stall with a very friendly and chatty stall-holder. After that we browsed the gift shops – and, to the gents’ consternation, a few clothes shops too. 😃 We all then needed a coffee and more natas and found a great café which did very good ones.

It was a bit of a trip down memory lane to stroll past the marina where we had started our sailing trip two years earlier with Marco – and even more so for Dave who had helped him sail the boat there from the UK in autumn 2021.

We headed back for lunch in the flat and grazed on sardines, cheese, tomato salad, bread, rocket and sardine pâté. De-li-cious! 😃

The afternoon activity was a decent walk directly from the flat along the coast path to Burgau. The views were stunning and the weather, which had been a bit overcast in the morning, cleared for us as we headed off. There was a bit more uphill than the previous day, but not too much – just right in fact. 😃 When we got to Burgau there was an enormous crane in the middle of the village as builders worked on a house there. We navigated our way around that and had certainly built up a thirst by then, so had a welcome beer in the beachfront bar Brizze.

Dave and the Sues decided to get the bus back and John and Catrina walked back along the coast the way we had come. That gave the Sues time for a glass of rosé before the bus came. 😃 We still ended the day on a respectable step count of 19,349 whereas John and Catrina put us to shame with their 27,446. 😃.

When we got back to the flat, we raised a toast to Marco and Theresa, who were readying themselves for their son Matt’s wedding celebrations over in Australia.

That night we went back to Lagos to one of John and Sue B’s favourite restaurants, O Mexilhão, renowned for their excellent mussels, fresh tuna and gin. Three of us chose the tuna, coated in sesame seeds. Sue B had sea bream and I tried the scabbard fish (as I was intrigued by the one we’d seen in the market earlier!) which was served with banana and passion fruit. Catrina and I also tried the typical Portuguese starter ‘couvert’ – this was olives, marinated carrot, bread and rayfish pâté. It was all really delicious and the service from the proprietor was amazing.
