Latitude Day One (still minus one)

We set off to the arena with camping chairs and a packed lunch and chilled out watching some dancing at this Lakeside Stage….. it was OKish, so a good time to eat lunch! Click this image to see all photos.

Next , was Frank Turner, who I have seen a few times with Chatters. He is quite lively so I was suprised to see him on so early, so was he I think. This is taken on the way back from the loo, thank god I am a bloke!

When I say lively, obviously not lively enough to put you off your crochet!

This was our viewing spot, I messed around with the clouds a bit, but we had great weather the whole trip! Frank was great as usual so a good first “musical” act to get the festival started.

We then walked to the lovely Sunrise Arena to see the slightly bizarre Fatdog, as recommended by Caroline and Chris’ son Jack. They grew on me but were pretty crazy. I didn’t manage to get a photo as it was all a bit dark.

However, on the way back I popped into the 2nd Stage and BC Camplight were playing. They sounded pretty good, a bit more my cup of tea than Fatdog. Here is a link to one track of theirs that I think I heard, but is pretty good nonetheless.

A little bit on the demographic of Latitude, well known for being white middle class, which is fair, within that it is made up of :

  • Grandparents with their children who are parents with very little kids
  • Parents with teenagers
  • Old gits… like us

Still very chill though.

Day one was really pretty good. The Vaccines were up next. Intrestingly the lead singer Justin Young went to King Edwards in Southampton, but strangely they never mention him……. wrong sort of music I guess🤣. They were really great and very “tight”, if anything too “tight”!

The sky was startng to look amazing just in time for Khruangbin or เครื่องบิน, which is Thai for Flying Monster (I think). I’m sure Sam can translate for us 😀. Here is Chris doing an impression of one.

So Khruangbin, possibly the coolest band ever. They wear fake wigs, I think so that they do not get recognised in public, and that theme is continued as the camera shots on the giant screens were always slightly de-focussed. We thought that might be annoying but it worked really well.

Here is a link to one of their newer tracks which is just so laid back. It wasn’t a problem being a bit of a way back as it is not the chaotic spectacle of soemthing like The Darkness (see Day 3).

On to the last bit of Alison Goldfrapp before Future Islands. She is bit dancy for me but a pretty good show.

Meanwhile the sky got really dramatic!

There was a bit of debate whether to see Future Islands or Kasabian. I had seen Kasabian a couple of times (before they sacked their singer for domestic abuse!) but I also really like Future Islands. So, joint decision, we went for the latter.

There seems to be another generation of bubble blowers around, which to be fair, do add a nice bit of ambience, especially to such a bonkers front man as Samuel T. Herring. He was so bonkers  that Chris and Caroline yoyo-ed between this and Kasabian.

We all nipped across to catch the last bit of Kasabian.Well worth it as they played Fire. A great way to finish the night .

It was a pleasant walk back to the campsite, especially when the festival provides spectacles such as this. Thanks to the Fuck Buttons (apologies to the Grand Mothers, but that is their name) for the backing track!
