Chilling on the Beach

The weather was not quite as nice this morning, but we knew it was improving in the afternoon, so we had a slow start to the day. As this was the last full day of our trip, we had decided to have a relaxing day by the coast. Dave was feeling particularly enthusiastic about boosting his step count, so he walked all the way down to the town and all the way back up the steep hill while I just lazed in the van and read!! 😃

Later on, we went down into the town together and walked to the end of the 2,500m long beach (the longest in the Guipuzcoa region) where we saw another of the sculptures on the sculpture trail, ‘In homage to the shipbuilders’ We also had a look at the Palacio de Narros renaissance palace. After that we came to La Iglesia de Santa Maria La Real – a medieval church and bell tower built in the 15th century built on the site of previous temples. The archaeological dig associated with this revealed items from as far back as the Iron Age.

We had decided to have a late Spanish lunch for our final day and quite a few places were shut on Mondays, so we had researched it and found a nice one. As we headed there, however, we found a really bustling one which was full of people so decided to stop there. The atmosphere was really nice and the portions were enormous. I started with Paella and then had scrambled egg (revuelto) with ham and mushrooms, Dave had fish soup followed by chops and chips. We were absolutely stuffed after that so went and sat on a bench by the beach to help our digestion!! We didn’t really think there would be any taxis available at that time on a Monday afternoon, but did search a taxi rank just in case. We were in luck as there was one solitary taxi there – we have never been so pleased to see a taxi and it was well worth a few euros to avoid having to walk back up that huge hill with a full stomach!!!

After a little siesta in the campsite, we went back down to the beach for a last day swim. By this time the weather was absolutely gorgeous again and the sea was fairly choppy so they were a fair few surfers around. We both went in the sea and it was a really pleasant temperature. Unlike in England, we did not feel like we had to rush for our towels and get into dry clothes the moment we were out of the water! Instead of that, we sat on the beach in the sunshine even though it was about 7 o’clock by then– it was really nice and warm.

It was definitely easier going back up the hill without a stomach full of food and it was also quite refreshing walking up in a damp swimsuit! 🤣 We got changed in the van and rounded off the trip with a brandy in the campsite bar! Unlike with most trips, we both felt that we could happily have continued for a few more weeks!! 😃

Hello!
I am Eva Eiroa’s english teacher student and friend too. I live as Eva, in Galicia, in the northwest of Spain. But, I am from Basque Country and I spent a lot of days in Zarautz when I was young. But, at the other campsite, the cheap one, at the bottom of the mountain.
It is funny read about your experiencies because they bring back many memories for me.
Have fun and if I made mistakes in my english, it’s my fault, because I have the Best teacher on the world!!
