Falmouth – Easter

We booked this fantastic flat in Falmouth for a family holiday for Easter. Sam and Harriet drove up from Brighton to Southampton on Thursday so we could all go together the next day, and Ben and Emma met us there. We set off and decided to have a break at Strawberry Fields at Lipton. I though it might be busy but all of the EV charging points were occupied .. it was a little stressful… but we got there eventually and then went in for a coffee and some food. We had wanted a fry up but the restaurant was fully booked…. hmmmm … not sure about travelling on a bank holiday… more on that later.

We then set off to visit Judith and Ivan in Lanner. Sue had made a lovely Easter cake which we had with a cup of tea. The check-in time was 4pm at the flat so we set off to check in. Ben and Emma arrived at Judy and Ivan’s shortly after we left. We got to the flat which is great. We would definitely recommend it.

As we got there first we pinched the best bedrooms. Sue and I had the top one, up a very tight spiral staircase and Sam and Harriet got a sea view. Ben and Emma arrived and we had a couplke of bottles of bubbly to get the weekend off to a good start.

We had booked into Windjammers and had great cocktails and food and then went to the local pub, literally 10 yards from the flat. Beer was pretty good and they also had a free pool table, which we made good use of. We retired to the flat to get a good nights sleep.

Saturday was a day for Judy and Ivan to visit. As someone had gone into the back of Ivan’s car they came on the bus and I picked them up from The Moor, and drove them up to the flat. they had a good look round, more cake – Harriet’s delicious coffee and walnut cake – and tea.

I then drove to the Greenbank Hotel where we had booked a lovely table with a great view for lunch. Very good value at £24 for 3 courses and it was very good. Not massive portions but that is a good thing!

After the meal , I dropped Judy and Ivan back at the bus stop. Their bus was already there!

We decided to go for a cocktail, but there was very little space anywhere, so we had to sit outside…bl**dy freezing.. so we wandered back up to the flat which was all of 200 yards away and drank them up there in the warmth with a nice view. After a little siesta, we could all choose one thing to do. Mine was to go to my favourite pub underneath the Fish and Chip shop. Then we went to Beerwolf (Emmas choice) where Emma taught us a new card game – Cambio. Not a game for the old as it relies on you remembering cards that you are not allowed to look at again as well as having quick reflexes!! Anyway – it was quite alot of fun!! We were quite lucky to get a table .. this happened a few times!

In Beerwolf there is a fantastic collection of books, all of which seem very competitively priced. Sam was particularly pleased with his book about rocks and minerals!

On the way to the loo I struck up a conversation with a guy and it turns out he was an old pupil of Ivan’s at Redruth Comp. So I introduced him to Ivan’s (Mr Greenslade’s) daughter and they had a photo together!

Then… Kebab!!!! Ben’s Choice… I havent done that for ages. Doner and chips.. what’s not to like! Emma got a kid’s meal so hers came with a free juice!  it was fun wending our way back through the streets of Falmouth amongst all the revellers! We’re not sure we’d ever been there that late at night before!

Time for bed….

We were rewarded for our long day with a lovely sunrise and fantastic views from the flat on Easter Sunday.

Sam went off to do some rope flow, and Harriet for a 5K run which included Pendennis Castle. Ben and Emma had a well deserved lie in. Sue and I went to charge the car up for the journey home, did a bit of shopping for the roast dinner and had a nice walk (via Koffiffee) and walked up to get a view of the ships in the dry dock. We then met up again at the flat and had a lovely walk to Gylly beach with the others down a nicely wilded path.

We then walked along the coast to Swanpool where the “children” went clambering over the rocks. Sue and I chilled out. After a brief discussion we decided to go to the Gylly cafe. Not suprisingly it was rammed but then a table suddenly cleared and we got a great spot outside sheltered from the wind but lovely and sunny. After a great lunch we wandered back in dribs and drabs to the flat for another chill.

We had planned to eat in (for once) on Sunday evening. Ben and Emma got a nice bit of pork and we cooked that for a late dinner (Spanish time). I did the meat, Emma did the cauliflower cheese, and Sue did the rest.

We had run out of beers so Sam and Ben took on the onerous task for going all the way to the local to get some takeout beers. After a lovely dinner we then played Hitster… great game! So great we played it until midnight!

The next day we hung around enjoying the flat before checkout time. I was a bit nervous about the journey back as it was going to be very busy. I was not wrong!

We had planned to recharge at the M5 services at Exeter. OMG so much traffic. A couple of us needed a loo stop so we made the decision to go on to Honiton where we had been to a BP petrol station that had some remote charging. The loos worked but the chargers were out of action! A quick check showed us some chargers at the town car park so we set off there. It was not a charging company I had used before so I plugged in and …… it all went red. The car completely locked up… it wouldnt switch off… move … nothing. 😬☹️.

After checking car insurance docs I found out we were with The AA, After 30 minutes they arrived and after lots of cancelling error messages they managed to get us going and we went via Lyme Regis where I had previously charged the car (so it should work!) .. and it did. it was still sunny so we took the opportunity to have an ice-cream and walk down the hill to see The Cobb. We charged the car and got back home after a 9.5 hour journey… phew!

Sam and Harriet still needed to get back to Brighton so they had a quick cup of tea and then got back there at 10 – a 12 hour journey door to door!! Emma and Ben fared slightly better but still took 5 and a half hours for a 3 and a half hour journey. The moral of the story – don’t plan a weekend getaway to Cornwall on a Bank Holiday weekend!!!

All in all, however, it had been a great weekend and we would definitely like to go back there again!
